Overcoming Obstacles

Sometimes life can throw you curveballs, and you may not even realize it when it happens. Part of growing up is learning how to recognize these obstacles and how to overcome them. I did a lot of self-reflection this past summer, and I decided that I deserved more. Why was I surrounding myself with people who made me feel poorly about myself? I promised myself that when I returned to school, I would pursue the idea of surrounding

The star of LocoCycle is I.R.I.S, a sentient motorcycle that looks like it is from the Knight Rider era of television shows. IRIS is supposed to serve as a tool for an unscrupulous defense contractor, but after being struck by lightning she decides to attend a freedom rally in Scottsburg, Indiana instead. Pablo, her unfortunate mechanic, gets his pants caught in her chassis so he is unwillingly dragged along for the ride. LocoCycle is clearly inspired by cheesy B movies so don't expect the plot to make too much sense. Trying to figure out how a human being can survive being used as a melee weapon by a motorcycle with martial arts abilities will just lead to a headache.…

“There’s heroes and there’s legends: Heroes get remembered, but legends never die” (The Sandlot). This idea of building a reputation that lives on after one is gone is seen in Beowulf, an epic poem by an unknown author from the mid-sixth century. Nearly everyone cares about how they are perceived and their reputation in one way or another, whether it is striving to make people like them or trying to become an unforgettable legend. In either case, the desire to have a good reputation is a strong motivator to them. The idea that reputation is everything and that one should do anything in their power to uphold and create a strong reputation is highlighted in the poem Beowulf specifically in the character Beowulf.…

Obstacles are an everyday occurrence in life. Some are small causing short lived distress while others seem to shake us to our very core. I have had my share of problems both large and small and I have found that the most difficult obstacle I have overcome is the financial problems we have gone through for over six years. When I moved to Texas I was very young so I didn’t know what was really going on at the time…

The reason why I had no friends is because I had abandoning issues. I did not really want to talk to anyone is because I was really afraid that someone would give me that abandoning feeling again. Being very lonely was not easy to deal with. I chose to be lonely because I liked to keep to myself. Also I had a hard time trusting others because of my issues, so I kept pushing anyone away that would try to communicate with me including teachers.…

I had just moved from Carmel Valley, California, to Atlanta, Georgia, and had zero friends. Whereas most new students would have easily integrated into their class after two weeks, I had still barely spoken to anyone after my entire freshman year, and was labeled as "that shy, boring Asian kid. " My occasional attempts to socialize with others inevitably failed, and after finishing the first quarter of my high school experience without a single friend, I was sure I would never overcome my social anxiety or become anything more than "that boring Asian kid." Being lonely sucked — I had nobody to hang out with, or around whom I felt I fit in. But most of all, it sucked because it made me feel like there was something wrong with who I was because…

Dr. Seuss once said, “Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory.” Trying to remember what happened to four years of my life and what those four years were filled with is tough. It’s so easy to remember the valleys and not the mountains. However, looking back on my years at Unity, I learned something incredibly valuable. Unity has taught me what it’s been trying to teach me since I walked through the door for the first time freshman year.…

We all listened to the same bands, loved the same teen heartthrob, and all had a similar personality. It took losing a core group of friends of mine transitioning into freshman year to show me that it’s okay to be your own person. I will say freshman year was a huge struggle for me to go through without being friends with the people that I had grown closest to in the 8th grade and years prior to 9th grade, but in the long run it has benefitted me more than I could have ever imagined that year. I now am not afraid to be alone sometimes and not always hang out with a group of people or one person every weekend. I’m okay with spending time by myself just relaxing in my room or grabbing some lunch at bread co by myself when I can.…

Looking back on my younger years, it isn’t difficult to point out that I had difficulties relating to others my age. Of course I had friends, but I soon realized that I would never be comfortable in large groups like many other students were. I often found myself hiding out in the library and losing myself in reading and writing. Both options offered me an escape from social interactions and it wasn’t until high school that I realized that I relied on both a little too much. All through middle school I had the same small friend group that consisted of me and two other girls.…
