In our lives, we are accompanied by people from many different generations. And going through life means learning new things, and developing our minds. One generation can teach another generation how to overcome hardships, how to encourage them, and how to forgive the mistakes we have made.
For instance, people from one generation take it upon themselves to teach another generation how to overcome hardships. In particular, “Mother to Son” shows us this by saying “So boy, don’t you turn back. Don’t you set down on the steps. ‘Cause you finds it’s kinder hard. Don’t you fall now-- For I’se still goin’, honey, I’se still climbin’, And life for ain’t been no crystal stair.” “Mother to Son” is about a mother, who is from another generation, teaching

For example, in “Two Kinds” Jing-Mei’s mother had treated her terribly when trying to make her a prodigy. But in the end, her feelings change, and she gives Jing-Mei the piano as a sign of forgiveness. Her mother’s anger is gone as the text says “And she was neither angry nor sad. She said it as if to announce a fact that could never be disproved.” Both Jing-Mei and her mother were both very stubborn and had been left on a bad note after the two had lashed out at one another. With her mother stepping up to forgive her daughter, she was able to mend their relationship and save it from spiraling down to nothing. In particular, “Mom & Me & Mom” is all about Maya Angelou trying to forgive her mother after being abandoned. After some time, her change of heart is evident as she says “I was beginning to appreciate her. I liked to hear her laugh because I noticed that she never laughed at anyone.” Maya had to overcome the fact that her mother had left her to enjoy her presence despite having conflicting feelings about her. The best part about her story is that at the end, she loved her mother because you only get one, and you should cherish every moment with her. Different generations may not be similar, but one thing they share is understanding
