I believe that a huge part of this is owed to technological advances. More interaction with others globally has introduced the younger people in society to new information that allows them to be successful in life. Simple things such as online tutoring resources, and even just interacting with others and being able to understand different viewpoints has allowed my generation to become one of the most open-minded ones yet. Not to mention, having the ability to be proficient in using these new smart-ware devices shows a tech savvy side that even adults have a tough time grasping. My generation is generation Z; a blend between generation X and generation Y. Although we are our own, we carry some similar aspects that have been handed down from before generations. For example, some traditional values from generation X (such as marriage, religion, and modesty) have been kept by some of my generation, while other non-traditional, more social values from generation Y, the millennials, (such as protesting and a raging sense of independence) have stuck with others in my generation. Part of the controversy in the article by Evans is that both the millennials and the above generation seem to put the blame on the other. On one end of the spectrum, the older …show more content…
In fact, a lot of generation X seems to find my generation to be troublesome and up to no good. A lot of this is due to recent cultural shifts that did not take place when other generations were in our place. The current youngest generation is practically split into two completely opposite groups. One of the groups is very traditional and smart, while the other group has a reputation for being rebellious and unmannered. These tend to be mutually exclusive, although there are exceptions to every rule. Due to the judgment of preceding generations, a lot of stereotypes have been created as well. These are caused by the culture changes mentioned. Some of these include, but are not limited to, an alternative music style, more access to illegal substances, and an exposure to things that were once not allowed. These obnoxious features that have the capability to ruin our generation’s chances of being “accepted” by older ones “show that our society is struggling to name and define exactly what is happening and what to do about it” and that we are “changing cultural norms and traditional signs” (Evans, n.d., paras. 1 & 2.) The truth is, even though a percentage of teenagers like to listen to a music style that is provocative and sometimes inappropriate, does not mean that they are a bad child. It also does not take away from the fact that
