We cannot all be masters, nor all masters cannot be truly followed- Othello by William

Shakespeare. In the play Othello by William Shakespeare, the use of language is the most persuasive form of control in Othello. Othello is a black man in a white society, and a soldier among civilians.. Iago is a Machiavellian villain because he uses other weaknesses to achieve his own desires, this helps him succeed in the manipulation of Othello, Cassio, Roderigo. The first person Iago manipulates for his own desires is Cassio. Iago says “ If I can fasten but one cup upon him with that which he hath drunk tonight already, He’ll be as full of quarrel and offense As my young mistress’ dog already” (2.3. 41-44). Iago plans to get Cassio drunk and getting him into a fight with someone. The manipulation happens when Iago keeps giving Cassio alcohol and which makes him drunk. Iago succeeds because his main goal was to get Cassio drunk and he did. If he gets in a fight he will get in trouble with Othello, and which also might lead to Othello firing him from his position of lieutenant. In addition Iago says “ I thought you had received some bodily wound: there is more sense in that than in reputation. Reputation is an idle and most false imposition ,oft get without merit and lost without deserving. You have lost no reputation at unless you repute yourself such a loser” (2.3. 249-254). In this quote Iago is trying to tell Cassio that reputation is not that important and you haven’t lost it…
