Although coined the ‘freshman 15’ it is not exclusively freshman who gain weight, and even if you are a college student it does not necessarily mean you will experience weight gain, some students maintain healthy diet and exercise even throughout college. These are a few of the factors causing weight gain in college students: poor eating habits, odd eating times, lack of sleep, not exercising enough, and skipped meals. Despite what some may believe small changes in behavior can have large consequences leading to weight gain. Weight gain has been found to inspire weight gain in others. If a friend becomes obese you are 57% more likely to gain weight as well, this is more common amongst friends and groups of the same sex. Dieting amongst friends has proven to be less successful in the long run than dieting with a friend of a friend. Food has a large effect on energy, and students need proper nutrition especially at an age where growth is still occurring. The generation of college students currently enjoys foods high in cholesterol, sodium, refined sugar, and unhealthy fats. Essentially foods that taste good, and are fast and easy to obtain. These foods are quite low in nutrition and promote sudden weight gain, which makes you more prone to heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and some cancers. Although some may…
