Obesity has become an ever growing issue in our society, since over a third of the people in the United States suffer from obesity. What is the real cause of this problem? Is it a lifestyle problem or is it actually a disease? The majority of people believe that this issue has become such a problem because of the lifestyle choices of people. However, there is new evidence that obesity is much more complex than just unhealthy eating and lack of exercise, but it actually being a disease. Just like a well-known disease obesity has signs, symptoms, and impairs normal body functions. The purpose of this essay is to show how obesity rates have risen from lifestyle choices and look at how obesity could be defined as a disease not just based off choices. The majority of people believe that the main reason for obesity is based off that person’s lifestyle since typically someone that is obese eats the majority of their meals at a fast food restaurant and does not exercise. Which has played a major role in why obesity has expanded the fast food franchises have drastically increased in the last 50 years. There has also been an increase in the amount of preservatives have been put into food. For example, McDonald’s fries have nineteen ingredients and preservatives instead of being made with fresh potatoes (Ferdman). Since these fast food franchises have moved towards using more processed foods it has made it cheaper for the companies and thus made the food cheaper for the consumer which…
