Let’s start with what a OSHA 300 Log is
The OSHA 300 log is a form used by employers to summarize employee injuries and illnesses. This log must be posted in a visible place where all operations are conducted and must be easily visible.
This form has three main sections:
• Identification
• Description
• Classification
The first part contains:
• Name
• Case number
• Job title
The second column provides:
• A description of where the incident happened
• Date of injury/Illness
• Injury location
The third area contains information on the type of injury:
• Days away from work and how many days the work will be restricted.

What are the rules
Under the Recordkeeping Rule, employers are required to maintain a OSHA 300 Log of serious injuries and illnesses. Most companies know about the two major exemptions that apply to these requirements.
Exemption 1:
• The first exemption releases employers in certain low-hazard industries from the requirements of the rule. These low-hazard industries are as follows finance, insurance, real estate, and more. OSHA then changed the exemption to a list. This is based on Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) and Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data. In 2015 it change again, OSHA released a new set of guidelines for businesses that could claim these exemptions.
• So, even if you could previously claim these exemptions, that could have changed. To check if your business is exempt, use the the NAICS webpage to find your NAICS code. Then check it against OSHA Recordkeeping Table 1 here to see if you qualify for an exemption.
