Nutrition is important to the health of every individual irrespective of their age. The Mediterranean diet has been examined in many studies, particularly those with a specialised focus on cognition or diabetes. The diet consists of a high intake of vegetables, legumes, fruits, cereals, fish and unsaturated fatty acids; low intake of saturated fatty acids, meat and poultry; low to moderate intake of dairy products; and regular but moderate amounts of alcohol (mostly wine and generally with meals).[42] The AIBL study suggests that lower adherence to the Mediterranean diet is associated with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and AD.[42] Additionally, women who primarily followed this way of eating had lower risk of developing …show more content…
Longer working hours tend to increase cigarette consumption among adult smokers, reduce their likelihood of quitting smoking and also increase the chances of former smokers relapsing. In addition, there was a greater risk reduction for any given amount of activity in older women than in older men, highlighting the beneficial impact that even very low levels of physical activity can have on survival benefits for women.[60] Among mid-aged and older women, a low level of physical activity was also associated with a higher prevalence of hypertension and lower prevalence and incidence of heart disease and asthma over 5-6 years in the ALSWH.[49]
The impact of physical activity on mental health and cognition was also examined across many longitudinal studies. Over a 4-year period, middle-aged females who undertook intensive physical activity at least 2-3 times a week reported better psychological well-being than those who did not exercise sufficiently.[61] Similarly, over a 7-year period, active sport participation was found to have a positive effect on cognitive test scores while conversely, low activity (walking) had a mostly negative
