The Biopsychosocial model is a model that incorporates biological, psychological and social factors when addressing an individual's’ health (Molton & Jensen, 2010). The model determines the importance and significance of all three factors in coping with illness. It assumes that a relationship exists between thoughts, behaviors, socioeconomic environment and culture among other factors (Molton & Jensen, 2010). The model identifies potential for psychosocial factors to increase the risk of certain diseases and illnesses. A study conducted by Mesner, Dogra, Logan, Baker and Weir (2010), using the Biopsychosocial model, in a Canadian community of adults 60 and over determined that physical activity contributed to successful aging. M, a 90 year old widow lives in her own apartment and requires little help. Due to her worsening rheumatoid arthritis, she now requires more assistance with activities of daily living. Identifying biological, psychological and social factors in her health is vital in providing care that is holistic. Mrs. M is getting weaker due to her rheumatoid arthritis. Adjustments to her RA medications may need to be made; a pain assessment can determine the need for analgesics. Given that she lives in an apartment with minimal assistance, Mrs. M (client) may require additional help. A referral to a care-giving agency can be made or a social worker consult can assist with obtaining in home care. Mrs. M must be encouraged to continue use of the community center facilities. Mrs. M benefits from the social interactions and physical activities provided at the community center. She should be encouraged to eat the meals provided at the dining room in order to prevent social isolation given that her family if far away. Visits from family are always encouraged. Mrs. M also requires a mental health assessment to determine her emotional and cognitive
