Windshield Survey and Reflection
A windshield survey was conducted in the community of Staten Island, New York to obtain a detailed assessment through visual observations within the surroundings of the community. There are many variations of the definition of community one coming from the World Health Organization defining community as “A group of people, often living in a defined geographical area, who may share a common culture, values and norms, and are arranged in a social structure according to relationships which the community has developed over a period of time” (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2012, p. 397). The number one preventable cause of death in New York City is smoking. The death rate is 75% higher in the south shore of Staten Island community than the entire city of New York. Non-smokers living in homes with smokers are also exposed to the risk of cancer related deaths from inhaling second hand smoke. Residents in this area have a higher prevalence of heart disease from smoking, sedentary lifestyle, and stress (New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, 2006).
Healthy People 2020
Healthy People 2020 is a federally funded strategic management program that organizes a set of objectives reducing health risks and improving the overall health of future populations. Health issues are organized into topics of Leading Health Indicators (LHI’s) to address health determinants that will educate the public on healthy behaviors and promote quality of life. These LHI’s are organized into 12 topic areas with 26 LHI’s used to assess key areas for quality of health. One Healthy People 2020 health indicator that I have identified for the community of Annadale is chronic lower respiratory disease (CLRD) that is caused from smoking, exposure to molds, and poor air quality ("Healthy People 2020," 2010). Strategic measures are used to assess progress aiming to reach four overarching goals:
• Attain high quality, longer lives free of preventable disease, disability, injury, and premature death
