When many people think of Chicago, they often think of a variety of many different things including the location of Chicago, the people, the culture, and methods of transportation throughout the city. Without realizing it, individuals often relate Chicago to the five themes of geography. By applying the five themes of geography to Chicago, people can get a good understanding of it without even visiting there. The five themes of geography include place, location, region, movement, human-environment interaction.

Chicago big city feel, a lot of entertainment, a wide variety of jobs, and many resources which are all reasons why people would move to Chicago. These are known as pull factors. Push factors are reasons why people leave an area. Examples of these include high cost of living, slow traffic, crowded areas, and a high crime rate. To get to places in Chicago, people can walk, ride a bus, train, cab, or many other methods of transportation. Ideas are spread throughout Chicago through advertisements and social media.
The city can affect the environment in many ways. Humans impact the environment by building skyscrapers, making new roads, and polluting the air. Most of these have negative impacts. Three ways the environment affects the people are it’s cold weather, rain and flooding, and it’s very windy. Flooding can cost humans lots of money especially in areas with high concentrations of people. Two political issues currently involving Chicago is the cover-up of a teen shooting that happened last year and whether or not the mayor of Chicago should resign. By using the five themes of geography, one can get a good idea of what an area’s characteristics as explained in this paper.
