It all started in1795 when the Pottawatomie Indians gave a track of land to the newly formed United States. Captain John Whistler was sent by the United States Government to take charge off the new land, there he built fort Dearborn. The Dearborn Massacre happened when the Americans lied to the Indians. The droughts made it easy for a fire to combust. Because of the drought, several fires had ignited in the city. Some of the fire engines were damaged due to the fires. At 8:45 pm on October 2, 1871, a fire broke out in the barn of Patirick O’Leary. The alarm was sent to the Chicago Fire Station, but the telegraph had gotten mixed up, allowing the fire to have a 30 minute head start. The fire spread extremely fast due to a strong a southwest wind. The fire destroyed two-thirds of the city of Chicago, and demolished millions of dollars worth of property. The Michigan-Illinois Canal helps with getting freight from the Great Lakes. Chicago is one of the main agricultural suppliers; it supplies corn, soybeans, and grain. Various fabrics in Chicago aid the state by helping Illinois have it’s needs met.
