Ned Guymon's Conversation Piece

241 Words 1 Page
Imagine coming face to face with a cold-hearted killer. Engaging in conversation, watching every word you say just hoping you can say the right thing to stay alive and not be the next victim. A similar situation occurred in Ned Guymon’s “Conversation Piece”. In the short story, a murderer and his friend have a discussion. First, the murderer reveals he killed his wife and then he proceeds to kill his friend. The entire time his friend is begging for forgiveness, and making up whatever he can to stay alive. Ultimately, the friend is clearly an untrustworthy person as shown through his deliberate acts of lying and cheating.
The friend consistently lies about what we later know as true. While talking to the killer, he asks:
“Why?”
“You know.”
