The Killer Monologue

"The directions after the ally were clearly not thought out, completely fake, as if he was supposed to die in the ally. The killer must've intended to give the victim a fake map and strike in the ally. The beginning of the map made perfect sense. This was thought out, for a long time." Grayson explained.

"Is it safe safe to say that the killer is linked to the map?" Henri asked.

"I believe so." Grayson responded.

"Do we know who this kid is?" Henri asked.

"Not yet, we'll do an autopsy in a few minutes." Grayson said.

"Or," police dog Sadie interrupted, "this." She pulled out Nick's wallet, then his driver's license. "Nick Vanscott's his name." Sadie said proudly. Grayson then ordered a few officers to bring the dead body back to the head quarters.

"Yes, we get that often," Grayson interrupted when he saw Heather struggling for words.

"So, my son gets murdered and they ask cats to solve it?" Heather questioned confused and a bit

The pale orange beam of the afternoon sunlight arrowed through the branches of the oak trees. Sam tilted his broad-brimmed hat down to protect his eyes from the piercing glare. With a glance down, he noticed the small rusted plaque, partially hidden in a patch of untamed grass, that rested above his feet. A simple plaque that had two words engraved: Tom Robinson. Sam mustered a small smile, shoved his hands in his pockets and gathered the courage to speak, looking directly at the plaque, “It’s been a long while, huh?”…

He worked to steady himself on to the bank of the creek as excess water from the stream drained off him. I thought he might have been in his mid-thirties, but there was no way for me to tell for sure, he was just too monstrous. I did know for sure that he must have been a male given the long overcoat, white dress shirt, and a black bow tie which he still adorned. Although it had seen better days, now shredded, burnt, and covered in muck and ichors which appeared to be old blood and flesh. The man let out a moan that sounded as if he were choking.…

End of May 2015. 14 year old me hunched over my desk in the back row, waiting for my teacher to play a video demonstrating “proper satire” to our Fiction Writing class. It started with a set of parents scolding their irresponsible children for finding drugs in their bedroom; the plot was so clichè that it hardly caught my attention. Suddenly, I jumped upon hearing a middle aged man shout, “YOU’RE GONNA BE DOING A LOT OF DOOBIE ROLLING, WHEN YOU’RE LIVING IN A VAN DOWN BY THE RIVER!”. The video was now about a heated, overweight motivation speaker screaming in the ear of a lanky blonde boy.…

Out of every person in the Hamill City Police Department I can only muster up enough brainpower to keep ten names in my head. I can’t blame myself though, I was only supposed to be here a month before I went back to my home in New York, where being a detective doesn’t mean doing crossword puzzles to look busy all day. I came down here four months ago to help with a case, everyone was out of ideas and the pressure was rising, so they asked for a new set of eyes and got me.…
