Debate Between Nature And Nurture

In the field of psychology, nature and nurture is one of the most enduring debates. This debate within psychology is concerned with the extent to which particular aspects of behavior are a product of either inherited or acquired characteristics. Characteristics and differences that are not observable at birth, but which emerge later in life, are regarded as the product of maturation. Some people say that nature, ones genetics, is the reason why they behave and act the way they do. Others argue that their behavior and actions are influenced and are a result of their nurture, which is the environment. The environment that the individual lives in also has an significant impact on the personality and behavior of that individual. It is important to test nature and nurture on identical twins because this way you can eliminate a factor, nature, and control and change the environment factor. Wright concludes that, since identical sisters share the same genetic makeup, you can predict and analyze the effects of their environment on their personalities (Wright). It is easier to study the effects of nature vs nurture on twins because they have the same exact DNA makeup as each other. It is not only easy to study the effects on personality but researchers can also study the effect nature or nurture has on their behavior, health and intelligence. They each have different hobbies and interests they each want to explore on their own. According to David Fields, the author of the book, Twins, Twins, twins may have the same genetic makeup, but they all have different interests (Fields 76). People think that since they are identical twins they need to be the exact same but in reality they do not. Even though they are identical twins, they still have their differences. Some twins like to be the same, so they dress the same way. But some twins do not like to be the same as each other so they dress differently or even stand away from each other, so that they are not compared to each other. You can have the same genetic makeup but that does not mean that you are the same (Fields 7). You can have the same genetics but have different personality.
