I will start by telling them something completely stupid and random. For example, I may say something along the lines of, “At night I go to the bar to drink a glass of milk.” By the time this phrase gets to the last student it probably has changed. Milk is obviously not a very common drink at a bar, so this could be changed to some type of alcohol, or this phrase can be completely different than anything I said at the beginning. This will allow the students to see that if this can happen in a matter seconds, then it can most definitely happen in a matter of years and/or decades especially if people only see Native Americans as uncivilized, unimportant human beings. At some point throughout time a person left out Native Americans from history causing the stories we were taught to be altered. In my class this will not be the case. Unit two is ‘The History.’ Many times when something is taught in school about Native Americans, it is not the actual truth. Students are only taught how untamed, aggressive, and uncivilized Native Americans are. For example, on January 18th, the students in AMST 203 made a list describing Native American culture. At the top of the list was uncivilized, savage, ferocious. This shows that the only information about Native Americans that they were given is all of the bad things involving them. The information that schools teach students can alter their view of Native Americans entirely. I know from my personal high school, I was hardly ever taught anything about Native Americans, and if I was taught anything at all, it was how uncivilized they were. They are always seen in the wrong light. I will teach my students that they have to look at the information they are given from a critical perspective in order to see if it is the entire
