The naked mole rat is a very strange mammal for many many reasons. Mole rats run a monarchy in their colonies and the queen fights and claws her way up to the top, they are deemed completely immune to the cancer disease, and one of the strangest of all; naked mole rats don’t die of old age. That’s right naked mole rats are just as likely to die at age 1 as they are age 30.
Rochelle Buffenstein has been studying naked mole rats for the past 30 years. She has recorded every birth date and every death date for every rat in her lab. She has come to the conclusion that at only 6 months old the rats have a 1 in 10,000 chance of dying no matter what their age is.
