This class has provided me with a very valuable learning experience. As a psychology major I don’t have the opportunity to take classes in the ALS department very often. At the start of the semester when we discussed what SWAPA was I didn 't think much of it, especially because it involved performing my piece in front of the class which made me nervous. However, listening to my classmates perform their pieces each week was one of my favorite parts about the course. It was great to hear people taking the texts that we were reading and engage with them by relating them to personal things and experiences. It provided me with a better understanding overall of the topics and issues that we discussed in class. Throughout the course there were many quotes that I found compelling and exemplary of this course, its content and objectives. One of my favorite articles that we read during the course was Peggy McIntosh’s piece about white privilege. “ I have come to see white privilege as an invisible package of unearned assets which I can count on cashing in each day, but about which I was ‘meant’ to remain oblivious. White privilege is like an invisible weightless backpack of special provisions, maps, passports, codebooks, visas, clothes, tools, and blank checks” (McIntosh, 1989). Being a white female who came from a middle class family and a town consisting of primarily white people I was unaware of my privileges and incognizant to the term privilege as a whole.
