The Invisible Package Of Privilege Analysis

This article was extremely interesting and thought-provoking, I feel as if it’s something that most people should read in their lifetime. The very first sentence is something along the lines of racism is mainly taught to people as being see in individual acts of meanness, not hidden systems that give dominance to a certain group of people and I honestly think that’s what society taught to the white people I knew from my younger years. McIntosh also goes on to tie in male privilege and how while some men may admit that they have more privilege than women, they also never are willing to give away some of that privilege. Which is also seen in a variety of situations, such as straight privilege or heterosexism and how we constantly hear about it …show more content…
I also really liked that she pointed out the distinct difference between the privileges that everyone deserves in a just society and the ones to oppress other groups. She just so wonderfully breaks down white privilege and how a white person benefits from it and granted there is always more to improve on and I totally believe that there are some parts of this paper that people make take an issue to and now with my educational level, I’m blind to those faults or expanded horizons that others have but I am very excited to hear the rest of my peers opinions and discuss this topic with our

    1) I liked how she starts her story with the emotional moment of the accident, that part made me feel dizzy and disorientated like her, at the beginning it was kind of hard to interpreted the text and what was happening at the time. The parts were the police were treating her like an animal really made me mad and I felt a little bit of impotence when hearing about how they waited so long to help her and they hurt her even more. I was actually disgusted but not surprised of the way the police treated her in the hospital, it was to be expected, besides she “killed” one of their own and on top of it she was a woman of color. I admire Assata greatly in this chapter, she is so brave and has a strong will of power, if I were in her place I would have cried and begged since the first punch to the stomach. I can connect the way they treated Assata during…

In the article, What my Bike Has Taught Me About White Privilege, the author explains how them changing their primary transportation method from a car to a bike has taught them a lesson about being privileged in America. Personally, I agree with everything that the author states and mentions within the article. A few main points I would like to highlight are privilege in general, the explanation of white privilege, and I would like to include my own experience viewing white privilege. Like the article mentions, the topic of white privilege is hard for a lot of people to talk about, and it is guaranteed to get some people into a heated argument.…

In Tim Wise’s book “White Like Me Reflections on Race from a Privileged son” (2011), Wise tackles the controversial topic of white privilege and how racial identity and whiteness here in America shape the overall lives of white Americans and adversely affect people of color. He entwines stories from his own life experiences from birth to present to make it both an easy read and relatable. Wise explains exactly what white privilege means and how this privilege is systematically embedded into American society and because of this, racism and racial disparities are rampant. He writes this book, not for those people of color, as they already know and understand the effects that whiteness (or lack thereof) has on their lives; but he writes for his…

    1. After reading the text and looking over the lecture I was not surprised to learn about how race and life worked together in conjunction with inequality. I would not consider myself a minority or someone who has faced racial inequality. I grew up in primarily sheltered neighborhood and was not aware really of what went on around me. However, as I aged I grew to see how even things simple things like school or TV fostered racial thoughts.…

Out of all the articles, the one that stood out to me the most was the last one where it discussed the privileges that people have in the article “The Social Construction of Difference.” I found this article interesting because it provided examples of privileges, which is usually seen as a difficult task. Personally I believe it is primarily due to the fact that we don’t like to think we have an advantage over someone else solely based on race, gender, class, and etc.…

“White” Like Me At the heart of American culture is the concept of racism; a continuous cycle perpetuated through years of injustice by slavery, violence, segregation, and hatred. Much like the symbolic “tree of life”, racism’s roots extend deep into the earth, drawing sustenance from each member of society. Yet in that survival tactic, it unconsciously steals a little more from one side—this is white privilege. “White privilege” is a mere social construction by which the dominant white group justifies their advantages and higher quality of life through diminution of people of color. To be a member of the white race, it is easy to overlook subtle inequalities—such as the wealth gap, career opportunities, education, etc.…

In Meghan Daum’s article “Using privilege as a weapon”, she tactically begins with insults thrown at her in the past. She says these insults in a brief and concise way. Furthermore, she makes being “an ugly hobbit” or “whore” not have much importance. Daum’s candid and wholehearted response lets her audience know that she has received “not-so-nice” insults in the past. Even so, insults do not define who she is nor matter to her.…

Jamie Utt gave detail through first hand experiences he went through in college, when he was first faced with real diversity. He then goes on to explain how his experiences have shaped his opinions and outlook on life. Discussing his privileges that he never before realized were apparent in his life. Much like many middle class white college age individuals he thought he couldn’t be privileged because he worked hard to be where he was, when people who were not as lucky to be born into as much privilege as he had to work much harder to get to the same place in life…

Again, the fact that whites have completely forgot that they are white is prevalent. And because there is a privileged group, there is an oppressed group. This does not necessarily mean that any privileged person acts in an oppressive way; just that there is always another side to privilege. Peggy McIntosh lists several things that white people can do that they take for granted that would be extremely unlikely for a person with colored skin to count on. “I can if I wish arrange to be in the company of people of my race most of the time.”…
