Students’ who lack prior knowledge often have trouble and/or are not successful understanding (comprehending) text. According to Abdelaal, Sase and Saleh (2014), it is important to “activate the correct prior knowledge to make the reading task easier for readers” (Abdelaal, Sase, & Saleh, 2014, p. 126). In the story, My Itty-Bitty Bio: Maya Angelou, students’ will need to have quite a bit of world and literacy knowledge to comprehend this text. Students’ will need to be familiar and comfortable with the text structure (expository) and the genre of biography. It will definitely be important for students’ to understand what is a biography and the purpose of biography. It will also be imperative for students’ to have background knowledge of the Civil Rights Movement and treatment of black people during that time period. If students’ are not aware of this historical events, the story of Maya Angelou will have no meaning to them. Students’ could not understand how Maya Angelou’s life experiences and contributions through her books, plays, and poetry is such an inspiration in our country. The story would simply be about a black woman who was treated unfair and grew up to write stories about something that inspired people.
