Nikail Janet-Rose Francis is who I am. A young African-American by appearance but little does society know that the melanin in my skin represents more then just the "black community". Fortunately, my family has given me the privileged to witness successful, motivated, and accomplished individuals through their own actions. Becoming a doctor has been my aspiration since I was six years old and I asked my pediatrician "how can I be you?" Honestly, I did not originally want to attend the University of Florida. I wanted to go out of state and experience different people, atmospheres, and environments other than Florida's. What drew me to have such excitement about the “GatorNation” is my visit here. When asked to name someone who I think is an exemplary communicator, the person that comes to my mind is a role model of mine, Micaella. At the beginning of my junior year of high school I chose to take a class called Professional Career Internship, or Cadet Teaching. Micaella was my assigned supervising teacher and allowed me to take on a large role within her classroom and quickly became someone I looked up to…

During the eighteen years I have lived my experiences have been fairly sheltered. I have never traveled out of the country, eaten exotic foods, or gone skydiving; consequently, I haven’t met many people of special interest. Not to say the people I have met are not interesting, on the contrary, most of the people I have come to know all have their own unique stories and experiences; however, I never did meet anyone quite like Miss May. To this day I can’t pinpoint what exactly it was about her that intrigued me so much, maybe it was her rich brown hair and almond-shaped eyes, or how she pronounced candy more like “kehn-dee”, or it definitely could have been the way her eyes lit up when she smiled—still she will always remain a mystery to me.…

Since the summer of 2015, we have visited an amazing group of educators, ministers, and everyday volunteers who work to bring refugees out of poverty and integrate them into the American lifestyle through faith. While I was there, I got to reach out to kids ages 2-17 years old that came from a variety of different countries.
