While everyone has alternate views in certain situations, ethics comes down to personal opinion, consequently, individual circumstances impact on one’s belief of what is right and wrong. As a manager, I believe expectations of me should be made clear by the company I work for, leaving no room for error. In theory, we are protected by policy and procedure and the rules that guide our professional practices as nurses and managers. Moreover, that is the drawback with ethics, at times there are just no easy solutions, or detailed guides on exactly what to do in every situation. Research and data collection may be used to acquire the correct information regarding certain situations, leading my decisions to be made both ethically and factually. Professional ethics involve decisions made on my values, duties, rights and responsibilities, which are guided by legislation. In the nursing profession, we are expected to make the right choice in every situation, we are supposed to know what is going to make everything better, furthermore, we are assumed to know not only what is right and wrong, but what will work and what will not. This is often difficult when working with people, families and loved ones who rely on us as nurses to get it right when it comes to ethical decision making.
