Personal Statement: A Career As A Medical Assistant

When I was a child when someone asked me, "What are you going to be when you grow up?" My answer was always, "I am going to be a nurse." When I attended college the first time, my answer became, "I 'm not sure what I want to be." Right out of high school making the decision of what you are going to do for the rest of your life is scary, so I juggled back and forth from teaching and nursing. I eventually decided to take a break for a while until I knew what I needed to do. In the process of the two-year break, I became a Certified Medical Assistant. The nurses were excellent and taught me new things and always explained what was going on and why we needed to do what we were doing. Working as a medical assistant I have also gotten to learn new things constantly and I have a desire to learn as much as possible. I want to be able to learn more and do more than I can working a Medical Assistant. Working a normal job where you do the same thing every day is not appealing to me, my desire is to do something where your knowledge is tested every day and no day is the same. All of this is why I chose to start the journey to becoming a Registered Nurse. When I think of all the great nurses I have come to meet in my life they all have two attributes in common. Those two attributes are compassion and attention to detail. I believe that I myself have gotten great experience practicing these two things each and every day with my work in the medical field. In order to have compassion, you have to first have empathy for each and every one of your patients. The two weaknesses that I am fully aware of and take steps to work on every day are my communication with others, I tend to be shy at first, and asking for help. I have come a very long way in my life with how shy I am. When I was in kindergarten I would not even answer a question in class, when called on I would lean over to my only friend in the class and whisper the answer so she would answer for me. I have worked very hard to overcome this, I am nowhere near as shy, but I find myself reverting back slightly sometimes when in new situations. I am able to talk to strangers and patients that I just met like I have known them all my life, but when it comes to people I know I will be spending quite a bit of time with I tend to be quiet for a while until getting to know them very well. One of the best things to help me, which happened to be this school year, was my effective speaking class. I went into the class with the I just need to get this over with attitude, but I had an excellent instructor that made me feel very comfortable. In the beginning, I went to class and would not even eat dinner because of how nervous I was for delivering a speech and by the end of the class I was fine I was not that nervous at all, I only had the healthy amount of nervousness that everyone needs to give a great speech.
