I completed Lab 10A to determine my current flexibility and my flexibility needs. I scored low to marginal zone on most of the flexibility tests. These tests indicate that my flexibility needs some significant improvements. One way I could improve my flexibility is by doing stretching exercises daily or at least a few days a week. I completed Lab 10B by doing at least three to four stretching exercising daily this week.…

1. In chapter 9, it is mentioned that acromial osteophytic spurring’s are developed as a result of repetitive contact of the humeral head against the acromion. Is there any way we can differentiate that traction spurring’s from a hooked (type III) acromion? Also, are these acromial spurs always related to rotator cuff disorders?…
Osteoarthritis is the most common reason for people to get a knee replacement in the US, and now a better and cheaper form has emerged for knee replacements. 3D knee replacements Many knee replacements are caused by osteoarthritis and researchers have found that a gene called FAAH is higher in people who have osteoarthritis. FAAH is fatty acid amine hydrolase, which is a membrane hydrolase with a single N-terminal transmembrane domain. In the past, the FAAH gene has been directly correlated with pain sensitivity.…
Physical therapist, Joe Terry explains that he has seen a fair share of “knee and pelvic pain to herniated disks to lumbar stress fractures, which cause severe lower-back pain”. However, nothing has changed. Crossfit may be ever changing but those injuries are less-severe than what could be expected. Most people hear of an once-in-a-lifetime injury that only happens to a few people. That is the only case that really worries people.…
Proper functioning of joints is crucial for adequate movement, flexibility, and activity. Healthy joints have a critical role in allowing an individual to walk, exercise, and perform daily life tasks. Unfortunately, the joints of the human body can lose their healthy functioning and present a debilitating weakness to the person dealing with a joint disorder and can have devastating affects on the life and well being of a patient [1]. Osteoarthritis (OA), specifically, is a joint disorder that results form cartilage breakdown, as the processes that breakdown cartilage overcome the processes that reform it. The resulting surface of joints appears to be yellow, rough, and eburnated.…
When I first learned about osteopathic medicine I was attracted to the idea of the holistic approach of working with the patient to treat the whole body and not just the disease. This osteopathic philosophy is supplemented with what I had learned during my time as a Public Health student where the focused was on heath education with an emphasis on preventative medicine to help the individual and community. I came to this realization when I was observing an osteopathic family medicine physician interacting with a diabetic patient that was non-compliant with his medication that came in for a cut on his calf that was not healing properly. The physician proceeded to explain how by not taking his diabetic medication, affected his calf from healing…

John has stated that he is at a point in his illness where if he doesn’t exercise his joints are becoming stiff and somewhat frozen, however, on the other hand, if he is trying to be active with his grandchildren, he experiences flair ups in pain. It’s understandable that patients with chronic pain fear worsening their pain by moving, but what most sufferers of chronic pain don’t realise is that maintaining mobility is essential if function is to be preserved for the present and the future (Pohl, 2013). The community nurse needs to prioritise and educate John on the importance of starting up his physiotherapy sessions again. Physiotherapists can assist patients with chronic pain to safely optimise their level of physical activity. They also help people with chronic pain to safely and effectively manage their own care (National Health Priority Action Council, 2009).…
It is important to remember that individuals with chronic pain may experience temporary increases in pain due to therapeutic exercise and may become discouraged. Nurses must educate patients to expect potential flare-ups in pain and not terminate treatment before achieving maximal therapeutic responses. It is important to help the patient distinguish new symptoms that may signify an adverse response to Pilates from the “good” discomfort that normally occurs when beginning a new Pilates program (Isacowitz,…
Therapeutic practices in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) are often incorporated to foster the emergence of motor skills along a developmental trajectory. However, many of the interventions used to optimize musculoskeletal alignment are static in nature and, therefore, restrict the expression of spontaneously generated movements. As a variety of movement patterns are essential for proper musculoskeletal modeling, restriction of spontaneously generated movements can impact how bones and soft-tissue structures develop and can lead to the development of secondary impairments that may impact a child’s long-term function. A dynamic alternative exists, as elastic therapeutic tape (ETT) has the unique potential to support skeletal alignment…
Athletes who participate in a contact sport over long periods show more symptoms of back pain, as compared to athletes who have been in a contact sport for less than five years (Hangai, Kaneoka, Okubo, Miyakawa, Hinotsu, Mukai, and Ochiai, 2010). Establishing a valid method of identifying athletes at elevated risk for back pain or back related injuries could lead to lower injury rates and improve overall athlete performance. Although no methods have been used for cheerleaders to identify elevated risk of back pain or back related injuries Garrison, Westrick, Johnson, and Benenson (2015) found that the Functional Movement Screen (FMS) was an accurate predictor for back pain in collegiate athletes. Although many studies like Kiesel, Butler, and Plisky (2014) have looked at the FMS scores in relation to past injuries, none have looked at the scores in comparison to current self reported back…
No one wishes to live for an extended time with chronic illness, but unfortunately, millions of people are experiencing great constant pain in their lifetime. Particularly, older aged individuals are vulnerable and medicine cannot cure the chronic pain. Therefore, the medical research groups are studying recent trend and the old-fashioned remedies to find out which therapy is effective for chronic pain in sufferers. “According to the pain clinic research reports,” chronic pain victims can be classified into two groups. First, include retirees and overweight people who are avoiding small activities.…
