Brownlee’s goals of improving his diabetes and stress management required a considerable amount of reflection. Various aspects in association with the care to be provided were examined, including the nurse’s scope of practice. Examining the nurse’s scope allowed for the development of suitable actions related to the set goals from a strength-based perspective. It was essential for a strength-based perspective to be utilized because it allows the nurse works towards meeting Mr. Brownlee’s established goals in a way that does not focus on his deficits, such as his poor eating habits and lack of physical activity, but on his strengths instead. Other resources relevant to the nursing practice were also implemented when working to develop actions that would satisfy these goals. One particular aspect that allowed for this growth came about when reflecting on the care plan that was constructed from a Rwandan perspective. Within this plan, many of the stated actions require a physical assessment of Mr. Brownlee to be conducted. Although I have been taught about the importance of completing a physical assessment, those of us constructing a care plan from the Canadian perspective did not state this as something needing to be conducted while evaluating Mr. Brownlee. Therefore, I learned that it is important to include a physical assessment of the patient within the action plan as it will allow for the nurse to gain a better understanding of the issue at hand as well as increase his or her clinical decision making ability when working towards developing a specialized care
