I have never been an adventurous outgoing person, let alone a person who goes to large events, therefore this assignment didn’t prove to be too hard in finding events to go to but making myself actually attend said events was what proved to be the actual problem. I ended up going to two events that have to do with clothing I went to the: Moving Talent Forward Fashion show and the MSU Just a Costume Open Dialogue discussion. I found that both were eye opening experience and in some ways similarly.

I came away with women’s costumes have become proactive/ suggestive and always in the subservient roles and yet the males are always the super heroes, warriors. For younger kids there isn’t much besides being a princess and or Disney character and for the boys you have superheroes and G. I Joes. No matter the age group the costumes for women were less/weaker people and the men were powerful. After discussing the issue of costumes and gender stereotyping we discussed race stereotyping in costumes. Montana brought up in his speech how you can dress up as whatever you want its your right but that we should first research or at least think about the story or culture behind what we are dressing up as. He gave the example of wear and chieftain headdress. Popular culture would have us believe that it just something that Native Americans get if they become a chief but according to Montana it’s more like a Purple Heart. That was one of the big concepts of our discussions is that we are role models and so we should educate others on how these costumes are not aproperate in the least
