This is not a regular love story. This is a story about a hopeless romantic and a non-romantic. (500) Days of Summer stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt who plays Tom, a young man who awaits for the perfect woman that will fulfill his high expectations of love. Also, Zooey Deschanel, who plays a young woman that does not believe in love nor fate. She believes everything is merely a coincidence. Tom and Summer meet in an office in which they both work, he is instantly awed by her beauty. (500) Days of Summer is a good movie because it illustrates a realistic outlook of life and love, exemplifies why expectations are disappointing, and follows a non-linear narrative to portray events.
The film is categorized as a romantic-comedy, but the narrator clearly states, "This is a story of boy meets girl, but you should know upfront, this is not a love story.” Tom is the type of man who will lay his jacket on a puddle for a woman to cross. Summer is the kind of woman with class and gratitude, yet she does not want a man to lay a jacket over a puddle for her, she would cross the puddle without any help. Summer’s attitude towards Tom is unspecified. She likes him, but even she is unsure of what label matches her feelings. Tom, on the other hand, is deeply in love, he is convinced that Summer is “the one.”
