It’s difficult to put into words how I feel when I’ve made a difference in someone’s life. Helping them realize they’re not alone, or there’s light at the end of the tunnel. Geriatrics and terminal patients is where my passion lies. Nearing the end of one’s life is a difficult and emotional time for everyone involved, and my desire is to make this transition as smooth as possible. Self-care is something I find very important in general, and more so in social work and other fields of mental health care. Self-care to me is yearly physicals, proper diet, exercise and time to yourself daily. Since I started school two years ago, I’ve had my fair share of stress, and I’ve been successful in managing it. My first semester in school I had several large stressors come toppling down on me. I was a first time college student at 40 with 15 units, struggled with a minor health issue I thought was serious, working part time, volunteering twice a week, and my mother was diagnosed with early dementia and became depressed. I had to deal with a lot, along with helping my mother get in a position where she was happy and thriving. I managed to successfully deal with all of that, and maintained an average GPA of 3.6, and made Dean’s List twice during my 2 years at North Idaho College. Meditation, regular walks and hikes with my dog, and enjoying the stillness of the woods to re-group are other tools I use. If I’ve had an unusually stressful day, I will go for a jog and then soak in the tub with candles and lavender oil. I strongly believe all of these tools have kept me grounded, strong and able to perform well. Should I find myself completely overwhelmed and in need of extra support, I would schedule time with a therapist.
Thank you for your time in reading my personal statement. I know what it’s like to be in need of support, to be frightened and feeling alone. I have a deep passion to give back, and be able to help others. No one should have to face troubles unsupported or
