Page Break We have had many great presidents during America’s time and one of those great presidents would be Franklin D. Roosevelt. He got America through the Great Depression and World War 2 and was one of the most influential presidents during our History. He was a democratic president who won by a land slide against republican Herbert Hoover and Socialist Norman Thomas. After the election Roosevelt was very busy with the war in Europe and the depression that was going on at home. This led to Pearl Harbor on December 7 when the Japanese made a sneak attack on American soil in Hawaii. After this horrible event America declares war on Japan, this is when Roosevelt made his famous Infamy Speech, a speech where the president declares war a day after the attack. On December 22, Churchill joins Roosevelt for the very first Washington Conference which was a topic about the plans for the Allied invasion of Sicily, the date for invading Normandy, extent of military force, and the process of the Pacific war were discussed. The two leaders took several months discussing how to take out Hitler and both had their own plans on how to do it, Churchill wanted to attack Hitler via North Africa and Italy whereas Roosevelt preferred a more direct approach across the English Channel into France.
