What Is Gay Marriage An Ethical Issue

Within the past decade many controversial issues have been presented in the public’s eyes, with one of the biggest ones undoubtedly being gay marriage. This idea of gay marriage being legalized first came about “On November 18, 2003, when the Massachusetts Supreme Court invalidated the exclusion of same-sex couples from the states marriage laws” (Shearer). Since then this idea has blown up in the media and it has become a cultural phenomenon. This issue has become difficult to discuss in the media due to the sensitivity of the issue; however, it has taken a positive connotation in a good majority of the public. The laws put into place play a big role in the attitudes and thoughts of citizens. They also help adjust and correct everyone’s attitude towards different types of behaviors. Now that a law has passed legalizing same sex marriage, it goes against people’s original moral values. Moral values are defined as “of, relating to, or concerned with the principles or rules of right conduct or the distinction between right and wrong; ethical: moral attitudes” (Dictionary.com). It has weakened the public’s view on traditions and weakened their views on sexual morality. All in all, it has redefined sexual morality. It goes against the main tradition and morals of a man and woman being bound together with marriage. Now that this practice is seen as justified and it has affected people’s views on this sexual practice, there is a chance that it could justify other practices. This has created a: “‘‘Slippery slope’’” (Liebler, Schwartz, Harper) frame, where “Same-sex marriage is a gateway to future moral atrocities” (Liebler, Schwartz, Harper). Some sexual morals that could have a chance of changing include: pornography, prostitution, sex trafficking, and pedophilia. If all of these morals become changed as well, it could cause serious harm and destruction to society. The world could and would become a place of free will where you could get away with any form of destruction to other people.
