A Muslim, sometimes spelled Moslem, relates to a person who follows the religion of Islam, a monotheistic Abrahamic religion based on the Quran. Muslims consider the Quran to be the verbatim word of God as revealed to the Islamic prophet Muhammad. Like Christianity, Islam teaches that there is one God in the universe, giving Muslims a monotheistic worldview. And Muslims believe that Muhammad was a prophet and Christians don't. Both faiths also believe in an afterlife, although the makeup of those destinations are immensely different in nature from each other. According to one 1998 study published in the American Journal of Psychiatry, patients who were hospitalized for physical problems but also suffered from depression recovered better from their mental struggles if religion was an intrinsic part of their lives. More recently, scientists reported in the Journal of Clinical Psychology in 2010 that belief in a caring God improves response to psychiatric treatment in depressed patients. Interestingly, this increased response wasn't tied to a patient's sense of hope or any other factor that might be bestowed by religion, according to study researcher Patricia Murphy of Rush University.
