Thus, focusing on two literary works awarded as the best work of fiction in the Pulitzer Prize; House Made of Dawn (1969) by N. S. Momaday and The Hours (1999) by M. Cunningham, this essay will demonstrate why these novels were considered the winners of the prize in their year, by analysing the major themes from the criterion used for fiction works. However, after the teachings of his grandfather, Abel feels that he has no relationship with them, since he feels like a stranger. To demonstrate this, a good example in the novel could be The Eagle Watcher Society which is an organization very representative in the Abel’s community. This society celebrates a ceremony for the hunting of an eagle. Thus, the fact that the tribe ritualize this act is what causes that Abel does not identify with his tribe, since he finds a totally different feeling there that he cannot understand; “they were medicine men; they were rain-makers and Eagle hunters” (Scott, 2010, p. 15). Abel shows a different attitude in comparison with the rest people of his community and, this is because he does not find the relationship between man and animal as a tribal religion does, and because of this, he decides to leave that world because he is not able to find his belonging through those traditions. Besides, the land is another major theme that emphasizes within this novel, which also follows the criterion of the prize for works of fiction because it has to do with American life. Throughout the story, many descriptions of the landscape are shown, since Momaday tries to emphasize the importance of the physical landscape, specially, in the Abel’s tribal
