Molly can hear her foster parents between the thin walls of the small house in Spruce Harbor, Maine. The year is 2011 and Molly is finding herself in this book, Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline. Molly is a “Goth” she shows herself off with a streak of white in her naturally black hair. Molly also wears black nail polish and black clothes with piercings. In this story Molly discovers herself through objects and people around her. High school is where it all started for Molly, she tries to fit in with her peers around her. Molly soon finds out that it is hard to fit in with the big group but being an individual person at the same time. This is difficult for everyone but eventually you learn how to balance the two out, and high school is a great place for that. Unfortunately for Molly, she is a junior in high school and is not able to fit in with the “normal” people affiliated to her school. “Most of the kids seemed to go out of their way to avoid her.”(Kline 4). The kids at Mount Desert Island High School do not like Molly and she is very much an outcast at the high school, as the author describes in the book. The Victorian styled household Molly will be staying at is gorgeous; it is invulnerable to any damages along the line of theft. The shutters are black and contrast the white siding beautifully. ”Molly takes a deep breath. The house is bigger than she imagined.”(Kline 11). Molly describes this house vividly so you can tell that she really likes the house she will be living in. The house is so beautiful in fact it takes her breath away.
