Modern liberalism and modern conservatism are both incomplete without one another. Both groups carry a unique quality that can bring society together and completes the society. Modern conservatism leans more towards the economy as modern liberalism aids liberty. For instance, without modern liberalism we would not be able to understand that “the government must protect individuals from the inequities of modern society and correct the injustices and failures of “free-market” capitalism including environmental degradation.” Liberals believe that the government plays the role of protecting those rights and disaster from occurring. On the other hand, modern conservatives “emphasize individual property rights and limited government (classical liberalism).” …show more content…
Modern liberalism aids in social welfare programs and several other programs that are used for the benefit of the society. Modern liberalists are humanitarian in a sense that they use the state benefits and government benefits and encourage to help those who cannot help themselves. For modern liberalists, a mixed economy seems more fitted for society. For instance, modern liberalists believe in diversity and equality between social classes economically and that we as a society should take advantage in civil actions as well as the rights given. “Modern liberals oppose military interventionism and unilateralism as insufficient remedies for complex problems. They tend to support foreign aid, arms control, and multilateral efforts (engaging and acting in unison with allies).” Although modern liberalism has its positives, the negatives of modern liberalism can be coercive. According to (the author of the book), “coercion implies the deliberate interference of other human beings within the area in which he could otherwise act.” In addition, the reference to ‘Two Concepts of Liberty’ in his Four Essays on Liberty,’ “you lack political liberty or freedom only if you are prevented from attaining a goal by other human beings (Berlin, 1969: 122).” In other words, liberalism has limitations to where a person can be prevented from making their own decisions due to politicians, other human beings or etc. …show more content…
The main goal for the conservatives is to keep the progress of economy functioning and giving the rights to every citizen to be able to freely sell their labor to any buyer or enter almost any profession and sell goods and services to the market.
