Reflective Essay: The Use Of Fallacious Arguments

Improved Essays
The use of critical thinking requires one to understand the argument first and then figure a way to handle/manage the situation well. But, sometime when we are involved in an argument, it often leads us to the fallacious argument. Fallacies are the common mistakes in logic we make. The PowerPoint form week 7 helped me understand how to critically think, and I learned about different common mistakes in logic that people make. The three most common mistakes in logic that I make are, using a faulty analogy, begging the question, and appealing to “the people”. The first common mistake in logic I make is using a faulty analogy. Analogy states a similarity between two things or event. Not everything and everyone are the same, there are things that are made for different and specific reasons, and the same way people are also different, there are people who have different personality than others. I have realized that in some situations I compare two things that are total different and shouldn’t be compared at all. Mostly I compare myself with others, and try to do things the same way as them. In a way it’s good because it helps me …show more content…
Begging the question is when one answers a question with an unclear idea; for example, “the criminal committed the worst crime possible” is not a clear answer, what do they mean by worst crime? What is the worst crime possible? I tend to make this mistake when I present to a class or a large group of people. I mostly get nervous while presenting and forget some stuff, which leads me to make this mistake. When audience ask me questions I try to answer as fast as I can to get it over with and I make the mistake of answering unclearly. A technique that I will be using in future will be, let your pen start moving, this is a technique where I will start writing down some question that I think others might ask after my presentation so that I can be prepared and answer

In 1986, Harry Frankfurt wrote an essay, On Bullshit, which many years later, in 2005, evolved into a book. Since then, an article titled, Taking Bulls**t Seriously, by Paul Babbitt has debuted, arguing that “BS is not lying but instead an indifference to truth and a misrepresentation of the self -- and worse than lying.” By the statement being made, Babbitt is making a claim that he very well believes that bullshitting is in fact much worse than lying. He does a good job at supporting his argument through rhetoric, hypocrisy, and propaganda. Overall the article argues that bullshit is wrong for many reasons and in many ways such as, that bullshit is deceiving in more ways than one, it is a fabrication of yourself, and it “dumbs us down” as…

Reflection and Cover Letter It is not ironic that I choose to rewrite the first essay that I ever wrote as a Nittany Lion, my rebuttal argument. Looking back to the awkward freshmen that walked into the first day of English 15 and the person that I am today, I realized that I grew in many ways. This includes my maturity level, my independence, my social life, and, yes, my writing. I was completely closed minded about my writing abilities at the beginning of the semester.…

In the articles “Three Cheers for the Nanny State,” “Ban the Ban!,” and “Soda’s a Problem but…”, all three authors present their arguments with facts, opinions, and counterclaims. However, one article presents itself better than the rest. I believe that the article “Soda’s a Problem, but...” was the most convincing article. Sarah Conly- the author who wrote “Three Cheers for the Nanny State”- argues that the soda restriction is a good idea because people would be stopped from making foolish decisions that they’ll pretty definitely regret.…

The diverse ways in which critical thinking can be applied are astonishing. One may find themselves in a group project working towards a common goal and an individual would find it immensely helpful to be able to process the ideas or statements and go through steps exploring possible problems, solutions, and meanings. In a professional environment, possessing this skill would demonstrate not only competency, but leadership. In a meeting, one may be asked what one thinks of the ideas that have been discussed and it would serve one well to be able to analytically and intellectually reflect on what has been discussed and arrive at an answer to a problem that one’s peers would comprehend. Possessing the skill of thinking critically is crucial in all parts of life; it is a skill that will be easily noticed and assist one in answering any question that…
