People who identify as atheist may have very different beliefs, but generally there are a few certain beliefs that are the same. One would be that they do not believe anything without empirical evidence. A lot of time this is what leads people to become atheist. They will see the flaws and lack of evidence in religion and slowly start to realize that religion may be wrong or does not have the right answers. The south tends to be more religious and conservative. The people here are more closed minded towards anything or anybody that has different values from their own. It can be bad to be open about atheism because it can affect almost everything in your life. It can affect getting job positions, people’s outlook on you, your relationships with friends and family, and even school. I think the biggest thing it affects is relationships with other people. Growing up my mother practiced some kind of neo-paganism and my father was agnostic. In general they were very open about everything. The rest of my family though were all Protestants and extremely religious. After I told my parents I did not believe in God or any religion they were ok with it, but the rest of my family completely cut off all contact with
