The piece is unfamiliar to me. Being the first time I have viewed the piece it took me a few times to understand what was happening. I feel that the movements matched the stage props, moving with intention as they traveled through the space. Getting the whole story behind the clip would help with understanding the segment viewed. Overall I feel the direction Alvin took matched the point he was trying to show the audience.
Review of Meredith Monk: Education of a Girl Child
1. The dancers use of space was very limited, staying in a small space throughout the clip. She also used a very limited body movement, using only her arms a few times and turning in a circle once. The movements portrayed that of the elderly. The small jerky movements took on the form of labor intensive actions. Struggling to grasp a sheet, and the challenges of standing. The music for the piece teased out feelings that portrayed a dark spiritual ritualistic occurrence. Scenery also helped with setting the mental image, matching the musical score.
2. Aspects of myth I noticed in the piece would be the setting and musical score. Both of these items help to set the feeling of the piece. The movements of the dancer set the stage for the image of an elderly person. The piece falls into the myth category because of its ritualistic and spiritualistic nuance. I would like to view more of this piece to learn what the whole story is. What is the …show more content…
The use of water on stage brought another dimension to the dance. Slowly rising and falling the dancers used low levels throughout the piece. Staying in personal space, the female dancer used smooth energy to ungulate her core up and down and kept a four-point base of hands and feet. Giving the dance another dimension the music provided and set the ambience for the scene.
2. I am not sure the myth of this piece. I see it as a relationship between humans. A mother and child, whereas the child is in the womb. The methodical movements of the dancer and the water could portray a child moving through the amniotic fluid. Child birth is part of all cultures. Some cultures place more of a significance in the birthing process than others. Creating a dance depicting the fetus and using its point of view is a unique demonstration of creativity. I would really like to know more about the piece to have a better understanding of the choreographers’ mode of thought.
3. Not knowing the exact reason for the dance, I feel the choreography fits the explanation that I have provided. Knowing more about the piece and building the background knowledge would create a better understanding to what the dance is
