However, with the internet becoming such a creative force, the alternative to alternative has become more than a joke. With the advent of the internet, new genres are birthed and begin to gain popularity daily, most without any trace of a record label to their names. The term “Indie used to mean without a record deal, all by themselves”, but was stolen by record companies and turned into a synonym for alternative. Due to its placement on said chart, I’m calling it. Meme rap is now a genre. The number one album Pink Season by Filthy Frank’s alter ego Pink Guy now has to be taken seriously. So I sat down and listened to it. Right about the time frank starts giving detailed directions to a Chinese dog eating festival, I knew this album was something special. Is it filthy? Yes, very much so. Is it offensive? Yes, very much so. So then Liam, why is it at the top of the iTunes album list? Memes. Memes? Yes, memes. Memes are now a driving force in our culture. Filthy frank is a concept that couldn’t exist without the internet. Frank is an expression of those intrusive thoughts you have in the back of your mind that you push down because self-control. Frank lets his viewers see someone with no self-control. Pink Season is not considered “real rap” or even “real music” by some, as its sole purpose is to offend. But as our world changes, I see things in a different light. This is meme culture. Internet dwellers who are so inundated with pop culture and social standards that they rebel and create a counterculture all online. It’s a brave new world, and we get to see its offensive
