For the most part, everyone in our modern society has a specific ritual regarding eating in meal time. Even if this sacred ritual is just sitting down on the couch with a frozen meal, it still counts as a ritual. Meal time can range from formal to informal, ranging from casually eating a pizza with friends to a complete tea party. An ethnography will be conducted to compare how separate meal times are conducted in an average individuals life. The results will go in depth to tell about modern Americans, and the practices and routines involved with meal time.
For the first meal I conducted, I chose breakfast with my mother and my younger brother. My family members and I all ate at the bar in my kitchen. Everyone ate separate things, my mother had an English muffin with peanut butter, my brother …show more content…
For both of my meals, we all talked about our plans for the near future, such as what we were going to do later in the day, or the next day. Also, for each of my meals it seems that there was always another media force interfering with interacting with others. Even though I did not do it as much in the nice restaurant, I was a little shocked at how much time I actually spent to look at some form of media, whether it be a television or a phone. In the restaurant I acted very formal and polite, while at home I yelled and acted a little more outgoing. I ended up having more fun with my friend, due to the fact that my mother and brother were not very happy about going to work and school. The observations of this ethnography seem to tell me that the location, participants, and time of a meal help shape the dining experience. For example, I would not go to a fancy restaurant with a celebrity in pajamas, I would also not eat breakfast in my kitchen with my family in a ball gown. These factors will shape ones eating practices, without the individual even thinking about
