The will to learn exceeds way beyond a classroom; it is a ceaseless thirst that begins within the individual. How one perceives the world starts internally first , but in order to develop oneself, external sources are necessary. Civil Rights activist Martin Luther King Jr. advocated for more than equality among humans, but also for the expansion of one’s mind. As a person who has been the student, the teacher, and the observer of both, I know that the education system established in America can not, as Dr. King claimed, enable every individual “to think intensively and to think critically. ” With that said, America perpetuates an uneven balance of intelligence and integrity forcing the impressionable student to choose one or the other. In fact, it takes “intelligence plus character” to form a substantial education. As of now, mass education has been unable to provide the balance needed for its students to thrive. A student who performs as strong or advance more than their peers, particularly in the specific courses that the educational system deems the most important, prove to be both morally and intellectually competent. Those who fail to meet the standard upheld by regulated learning are left “scuttling along at the bottom of the pond,” and the rest continue to receive societal praise (Rose 348). Mike Rose represents a prime example of a bright individual who fell short of the academic tower, when his school mistaken his test results with another. “The error went undetected,” leaving a smart kid, verified by testing, like Rose “in the vocational track for two years” (346). The individual can not possibly rely solely on the education system that works as a factory. Someone is always bound to fall through the cracks. The system was made to teach children, not the
