Someone simply cannot think critically without some form of previous education because without one there is no background knowledge upon which to base a critical inquiry. Critical inquiry, as will be discussed, is exceedingly vital to the development of critical thinking skills. Butler, a former Chemistry department chair and college dean at Brigham Young University, wrote a forum entitled “Everybody is Ignorant, Only on Different Subjects,” which discussed education and continual learning. In this essay he explained what it takes to become educated.
