There are many people in this world that are not aware that education is a step towards having a good life. There are plenty who believe education was a waste of time but throughout life’s tests and hardships came to the realization that education is key. The authors Mark Mathabane, Richard Rodriguez, and Malcolm X went through hard times during their childhood years and in their articles they share what caused their paradigm about education to shift.
Richard Rodriguez was born in Sacramento, California. Richard was shy when he was young and he knew very few words in english. He was embarrassed because he did not speak english fluently. His teachers told his parents to only speak to him in english, and later on he started reading books that were more advanced. All the books he read made him pursue an education. “Didn’t I realize that reading would open up whole new worlds? A book could open doors for me. It could introduce me to people and show me places I never imagined existed.” He graduated from a highly recognized college and began his career in what he discovered his love for reading. I don’t want you growing up to be like your father.” His father did not go to school, he believed it was unnecessary because they would not be accepted by white people if they were to get a job. “I promised her that I would go to school forever.” Mathabane changed his mind after his mother told him that an education would take him a step further to having a good life. The first college he attended was Limestone College. He graduated from Dowling college, and then became an editor and in 1986 he wrote his autobiography, Kaffir
