Masculinity In Sports

As I grew up, I did what was considered normal for a young boy: I played baseball, soccer, basketball and hockey in leagues. The Basketball slipped away because I was bad at it and didn’t care to try to get better, I was okay at hockey (mostly rollerblade hockey), but excelled at soccer and baseball. I loved playing them, but I never wanted to do it professionally. It was more of a leisure activity on weekends. With baseball/softball, it’s even more leisure with guys my age because there are “beer leagues” which are basically guys getting drunk and playing softball.

What I noticed when I grew up though is that some of the sports that I played went on to be completely male dominant, where as other ones I played had a lessened interest among men as I got older. If there is a sport in which a woman doesn’t need to be as big or strong or fast as a man, it’s baseball.

Baseball is the shining light if where integration can happen. Seriously, you don’t have to be big and strong to play baseball. Not saying that women can’t be that, but watch an entire game and look at most of what the players are doing: One team is sitting on the bench, the other team is standing around on the field while the pitcher and catch do most of the actual work. Occasionally there is a big play where someone dives and makes a catch, or hits a homerun. I’m pretty sure a woman can do all of that.
