Insecurity is the lack of self-confidence or assurance in oneself. Many women experience insecurities because they do not feel good enough for someone or pretty enough for society. Many examples in these two stories, Mascara and Purse, shows how girls are tricked into being something they are not in order to fit in. Girls will do anything and everything to make them feel better about themselves and others. Most people do not even notice girls have insecurities because they hide them so well. All the girl want is to feel accepted especially by the boy. Everyone wants to feel accepted by someone. Everyone should accept people for who they are but living in a world like ours is hard. It is show through the story mascara, the girl applies many products in order to be good enough for someone and feel accepted. Julie has feelings for the boy but is not sure how he feels about her. Julie uses a purse as a guide to seeking approval from this boy. She asks him many questions about the purse and thinks his comments will show whether he cares for her and accepts her. “ So do you like this purse as much as the one I have now? Sure. Yeah. What do you mean sure? What do you mean what do I mean? Well you sound doubtful. Jesus. Look I think it’s nice. I mean it. I just, I want to, you know get taken seriously when I ask you a question. And, I want to look good for you.” (204). Julie wants to be taken seriously and look good for him and because he is not answering her questions she thinks he does not care about her. The boy seems to be trying but boys do not shop and they do not care about the accessories as much as girls do. He is trying but Julie does not feel accepted by him. She ends up not getting the purse at all but uses it as a test to seek her approval he tells her he doesn’t care about the things she wears just the person she
