However, in the summer of 1505 Martin underwent an experience that would change his entire view on life and send his life in a complete different direction. Martin was caught in a thunderstorm where he thought he would die and feared for his life. Martin was very frightened and in his distress called out to the saint of the minors, St. Anne. “Save me St. Anne and I will become a monk” he cried. He believed that this was the only way and when the storm passed and he was safe, Martin felt that he must keep his promise and become a Monk. Although it was a challenging thing to do and was a huge disappointment to his father Martin went through with it. All though the storm was the main reason for his decision, Martins fear of the wrath of God and hell also played a part in the decision. A close companion of Martin told him that if he focused his life on Christ he would find the peace he so eagerly wanted. When he was 27 he was allowed to attend a big time church conference in Rome. The conference did not have the effect on his life that he hoped for. Instead of making things better things worsened because of the perversion and corruption he saw in the Catholic priests. In belief that it would help him suppress his new found spiritual anger, Martin decided to enroll in to the University of Wittenberg. He did great and later received his doctorate in theology and became a professor at the University.
While preparing lectures Martin finally felt like he had reached the spiritual peace he searched for. Psalms 22 which tells about Jesus’s cry for mercy while on the cross was what did it. Psalms 22 reminded him of himself and his cries for Christ’s mercy. One day Martin finally understood the key to spiritual peace and salvation. Thanks to Paul’s Epistle to the Romans that says “The just will live by faith”, he understood that the point was not to fear God or Hell but to believe that only through faith could you reach salvation.
