Marketing Objectives
First and foremost, the Los Angeles Angels have to market to the fans they already have. Keeping a loyal fan base happy, is essential for long term success. By using market penetration and targeting existing customers with things they already enjoy, via advertising and promotional campaigns, the Angels will solidify the back bone of their market. For this, through our marketing plan, the Angels will use a fan favorite player, Mike Trout. Trout was drafted in 2009 by the Angels and has had success from the start. Through our marketing plan, we will have a jersey giveaway that will include Mike Trout jerseys for fans that come to see him play, we will also run social media ads featuring Mike Trout. Through these ventures, the Los Angeles Angels will successfully keep loyal fans loyal, while also maximizing their long time best player’s marketing potential.
The next important part to our proposed marketing plan, is market extension. Here the Los Angeles Angels will target a market that has just been opened to them. Shohei Ohtani is the break out player for the Angeles this season, and capitalizing on his performance now, will show benefits for years to come. Ohtani is from Japan, this opens the door to targeting baseball fans that live in Asia, by marketing Ohtani in a specific way, it can drastically increase the Los Angeles Angels fan base among Asian countries. The product itself isn’t changing, the Angels will still be marketing a popular player, who is great at baseball, which is what every team does. With diversification the Los Aneles Angels will be in new territory, they will be diving head first in a new product in a new market. To do so, the Los Angeles Angels will build/encourage fan clubs in the most popular Japanese cities. To encourage self-creation of these clubs, the Los Angeles Angels will offer discounted prices on tickets and merchandise to members of international fan clubs. The Angels would also work with travel companies in LA to create packages that fan club members can purchase online. For example the Angels would partner with hotels, restaurants and other entertainment venues, to build packages where international fans could come to LA for a weekend, have a place to stay, places to eat, see an Angel’s game, and have entertainment options in the city. To build more hype for this idea, the first time a fan club group comes out, the Angels can do a full promotional campaign video, following the fans from Japan to LA. Along the way it would show the flight, accommodations, hotels, restaurants, and the game day experience these fans had. Once other international fans see this, they will either be encouraged to join an existing fan club, or start one of their own. The idea with diversification is to take advantage of the opportunity Shohei Ohtani has given the Angels, break even further into the Asian baseball fan base, and if for some reason Ohtani isn’t around in a few years,
