In 1914, Austria-Hungary had already annexed (taken over) many other places that are shown in the map on the left. On the 28th June the same year, a man named Franz Ferdinand, that was heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary, went to inspect the army in Sarajevo with his wife Sophie in Bosnia- much to the indignation of Serbian Nationalists. These nationalists were united in the belief that they should be part of an independent and ambitious Serbian nation. (Due to the fact that Austria-Hungary had annexed the capital in 1908) The same day was Serbia’s National Day, making the visit perceived to the nationalists as a direct insult to Serbia.…

World War One was a catastrophic event that involved almost all of the major powers of the twentieth century. When looking at the causes of this major world event one might believe that the sole cause of the war was the assassination of Archduke Francis Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary (The DBQ Project, Background Essay). There is reason to believe that the causes of the war had a more lasting effect and were more broader subjects than the assassination of just one man. World War One also called The Great War had four main underlying causes, imperialism, nationalism, alliance systems, and a want for war. Many nations were looking for a reason to start or get involved in a war.…

I chose Gavrilo Princip to research because he changed more in this period of history than anyone else by starting World War I. Thousands of people died because of him, and all countries were affected. World War I also changed the way countries fought in wars, making Princip’s actions more impactful than anyone in history. The archduke traveled to Sarajevo in June 1914 to inspect the armed forces in Bosnia and Herzegovina, former Ottoman territories in the turbulent Balkan region that were annexed by Austria-Hungary in 1908, which angered Serbian nationalists, who believed they should become part of the newly independent and ambitious Serbian nation.…

The assassination of Franz Ferdenant, the heir to the Austrian-Hungarian throne, and his wife, caused by a Serbian nationalist called Gavrillo Prinship in June 1914. This made the war more likely to happen since Franz was the only man capable of stopping any war with Russia since he was so against it. He would state repeatedly on how he would do anything in his power to prevent war with Russia. Not only that, but Ferdinand was also open to the idea of turning his Austrian Hungarian bi-part state into a tri-part state with Serbia despite his beliefs about the people, meaning that when Prinship, a serb, killed Franz, it was against the interests of the Serbian people interests, however since the Austrian empire used this assassination as a way…

The Diplomatic state of 19th century Europe was extremely complicated, the political landscape was made up of several empires spread out across the continent vying for power. Beginning with an arms race between Germany and Britain, which eventually spread to the rest of Europe. The individual nations built up massive armies and stockpiles of weapons in the hope that every other nation would be reluctant to fight them, this was unfortunately not the case.
