The spark of war ignited when a group of Yugoslav nationalist who disliked being a part of Austria-Hungary assassinated the Austro-Hungarian Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife as his motorcade processed through the streets of Sarajevo. Soon thereafter the Austro-Hungarian Empire declared war on Serbia, and in turn Germany declared war on Russia.
Knowing that France would attack Germany, Germany decided to act quickly and invade France through neutral Belgium. Following this the British stepped in to prevent the Germans from advancing any closer to English soil. So began what came to be known as the Great War.

In 1918, under increasing pressure from the steady stream of incoming US reinforcements Germany called for an Armistice, bringing an end to The Great War. After six months of negotiations the treaty of Versailles was signed, this saw to the dissolution of the German, Russian, Ottoman and the Austro-Hungarian Empires respectively, and decided that the Central Powers were to pay for all of the damages caused during the war.
