Limiting Reactants Lab Report

Decent Essays
Limiting reactants occur in a reaction when one of the reactants runs out and there is excess of another reactant. It is important to understand limiting reactants because it allows us to adjust the amount of chemicals we need to create a product without having excess chemicals. On October 5, 2017, we completed a lab in which we determined which chemical was the limiting reactant in a reaction by adding each chemical to the excess chemical and observing which formed a precipitate.

A possible chemical reason that this experiment yielded less than 100% cyclohexanone was due to the spontaneous decomposition of sodium hypochlorite, 2NaOCl = 2NaCl + O2, which decreased the amount of reactant present in the initial reaction when hypochlorous acid was formed, which was the oxidizing agent required to oxidize cyclohexanol into cyclohexanone. Sodium hypochlorite decomposed into O2 and NaCl due to a multitude of factors such as exposure to high temperatures, prolonged storage time or sunlight exposure. If a large enough quantity of the sodium hypochlorite was decomposed to limit the reaction that produced hypochlorous acid, the quantity of cyclohexanone produced may be affected. This would have resulted in a decrease in the production…

When hydrochloric acid was added to the unknown and known solutions, both resulted in no reaction. This also occurred when potassium hydroxide was added to both of the solutions. Barium chloride was then added to the two solutions, which resulted in a cloudy white precipitate from both of the solutions. A cloudy white precipitate also formed when calcium nitrate and ammonium nitrate were added to both the unknown and known solutions. These reactivity tests were conducted in order to establish how the unknown compound would react with acids, bases, and salts.…

“Classifying Chemical Reactions - Lab Report” I - Introduction - Chemistry is the study of the composition, structure, properties and change of matter. In chemistry, chemical and physical changes are used to help scientists understand how different substances react given various circumstances. A chemical change is any change resulting in the formation of a new chemical substance(s). A physical property is any change that does not involve the chemical makeup of a substance at all. In total there are five (5) chemical reactions.…

A limiting reactant is any reactant that is used up first in a chemical reaction and it determines the amount of product that can be formed. The excess reagent is the product that you have too much of and doesn't get used up completely. To find the limiting reagent first you have to calculate the amount of product that can be formed by each reactant. If 1.0 mol of “A” reacts with 2.0 mol of “B” given that the reaction is 2A + 3B --> A2B3. You have to set up two Stoichiometry problems making them equal to moles of the products.…

Diels-Alder Reaction Objective: The objective of this lab was to do a diels-alder reaction using anthracene, maleic anhydride, and xylene to create 9,10-dihydroanthracene, 10-, -succinic acid anhydride. Experimental: Anthracene (1.00g, 5.61x 10-3 mol), maleic anhydride (0.75g, 7.61x 10-3 mol), xylene (5mL, 4.71x 10-2 mol), and a stir rod were added into a round-bottomed flask.…

This experiment was performed in order to prepare the Grignard reagent from aryl or alkyl halides and demonstrate the principles of organometallic chemistry. The Grignard reagent was prepared via a radical mechanism. The Grignard reagent was then used to prepare a carboxylic acid from carbon dioxide, demonstrating its ability to create carbon-carbon bonds by acting as a strong nucleophile. As the R group of the Grignard reagent was unknown, molecular weight and melting point were then used to identify the resulting carboxylic acid. The molecular weight was determined using titration techniques and the melting point was measured using a Mel-Temp Apparatus.…

Acid-base chemistry can be used to separate the components of a mixture, if one or more of those components are acidic or basic, based on the solubility of that mixture. Solubility is the ability of a solute to dissolve in a solvent and it’ll usually form a solution. An extraction is when compounds are dissolved from a solid into a solvent or from a solution into another solvent. Solvent-solvent is when nonaqueous solvents and reagents are used to remove an element from an aqueous solution. The purpose of this experiment is to determine the composition of mixtures, identify an unknown mixture and calculate the percent recovery.…

It was like any day before an exam, I was up in my room, laying down on my couch, practicing questions from my textbook. I had gone to the end of the chapter, trying to find a challenging question to attempt. The question I ended up picking required me to find a balanced chemical reaction equation, but only provided me with how much of each reactant and one product was present, as well as how much present by mass of each element in the given reactants and product there were. Upon beginning, I knew what I had to do and after some time, I had finally found been able to determine the formula for the two reactants and one product. This, however, did not satisfy the question.…

By combining the unknown compound with an acid, a base, and two salts, its reactivity was determined. Reacting the unknown compound with sulfuric acid (H2SO4) produced no visible reaction (precipitate), although the pH of the resulting solution was very acidic. Combining the unknown compound with sodium hydroxide (NaOH), a strong base, also had no visible reaction. However, the resulting solution was a lot more basic. Reacting the unknown compound with sodium nitrate (NaNO3), a salt, did not have a visible reaction nor did the pH of the resulting solution change.…

In this equation, x and y denotes the number of moles of RE and Mn atoms per formula unit of the structure, respectively. The RE and Mn represent the theoretical magnetic moment of trivalent free RE3+ ions and divalent Mn2+ ions respectively. The experimental values of total magnetic moments were found to be smaller than the calculated values (Table xyz). The crystal field effects can lead to lower value of magnetic moments for RE3+ ions in these compositions as compared to free RE3+ ions, which in turn could lower the total magnetic moment of these compositions. This discrepancy in the total magnetic moment values could also be due to the presence of secondary phases in these samples.…

Chemical reactions keep the world alive, and after this research, I realized just how many chemical reactions, especially precipitation reactions, ruled the world. It is such an integral part of daily life, yet we are not even remotely close to realizing it is happening. It was interesting to see that the reaction was able to produce two kinds of films – one photographic, while the other pertains to a biological structure. Another interesting thing was the juxtaposition of the two application examples, and how it taught me that chemistry overlaps with multiple subjects such as physics and biology and even anatomy and much more. This gave me a wider perspective of chemistry’s application.…

For example at station one, barium chloride reacted with silver nitrate yielding to barium nitrate and silver chloride. Barium nitrate is aqueous because all nitrates are soluble. Silver chloride is the precipitate because all chlorides expect silver and a few others are soluble, since silver is an exception silver chloride is insoluble. To determine which reactant out of the chemical reactions the solubility rules provided the guideline necessary to figure out which reactant is the precipitate. The reactions in this equation were all of the same type of chemical reaction.…
