The Victorian cross was established in 1856 by Queen Victoria, for this is the most distinguished award and is given for the most favourable acts of bravery during war. Despite being injured two times Leonard refused medical attention, if the bomb was about to go off, Leonard would cover the bomb with either sandbags or his grey coat. Leonard’s actions not only risked the survival of his own life, but had also saved the life of the other Australian soldiers who were fighting in the trench.
